Marco Mazzoni

Marco Mazzoni is an Italian artist born in 1982 in Tortona, in the province of Alessandria, and based in Milan. In 2007 he obtained his degree in painting from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. He works exclusively with colored pencils — a medium he adopted out of financial necessity during his studies and transformed into his distinctive signature — to create drawings of extraordinary technical density depicting the cycles of nature and worlds deeply rooted in Italian folklore, particularly the female herbalists and healers of 16th to 18th century Sardinia. His compositions show female faces whose eyes are always hidden by flora and fauna — medicinal plants, insects, birds — in a fusion where the organic and the human become inseparable. His work has been exhibited in galleries across Europe and the United States and has appeared in publications including Hi-Fructose.
