Marc Burckhardt

Marc Burckhardt is an American painter and illustrator born in Germany in 1962 and raised in Waco, Texas. The son of a German father and an American painter mother, he spent his childhood summers in Europe immersed in the Northern Flemish masters — an influence he would never abandon. He studied Art History and Printmaking at Baylor University and earned his BFA in Illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 1989. His work fuses historical symbolism with contemporary themes through Old Master techniques — monochromatic underpainting and color glazing — frequently on wood panels. He has been commissioned by Gucci, Porsche, Time, Rolling Stone and The New York Times, has won a Grammy Award for the Johnny Cash packaging, Gold and Silver Medals from the Society of Illustrators and a Cannes Lion, and was named Texas State Artist in 2010 by the state Legislature.
