José Luis Carranza

José Luis Carranza González is a Peruvian figurative painter born in Lima in 1981. Trained between 2000 and 2006 at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Perú, an institution known for its strict adherence to classical technical training, his work fuses mastery of Renaissance techniques — Rubens, Goya — with a contemporary sensibility marked by cultural violence, religious fragmentation and the clash of civilizations. In 2009 he won the National Passport Contest organized by the French embassy in Peru, which allowed him to study European master collections in France. His working method — without prior sketches, painting directly from the mind onto the canvas — generates compositions of great narrative density exploring what he calls the structural violence of everyday existence.
